Chapter nine gives the reader an overview of the trematoda as one of two groups representative of the flatworm phylum Platyhelminthes. Various aspects of the morphology of adult trematodes is dealt with in detail. The discussion begins with an examination of the unique outer covering of members of this group, the tegument. This is followed by an examination of the diversity of what are considered incomplete digestive tracts. The discussion of the reproductive system follows the same detailed format as presented for the tegument and digestive tracts. Ample illustrations help to augment these descriptions. Lesser detail is presented in the examination of the muscular, nervous, and reproductive systems. Within the context of the reproductive system discussion, a review of trematode generalized life cycle patterns is pictorially presented. An introduction to the general physiology and chemotherapy illustrative of the trematodes is included. The chapter concludes with a brief classification of the group emphasizing only those trematodes that will be discussed in subsequent sections.
